The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen ~ Review & Quote-tastic (@SarinaBowen)

I have finally picked up my first Sarina Bowen read, and I have fallen in love with her ice hockey world! In this particular book, the characters may be in college, but they have to work harder than everyone else.

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves has someone else. What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He's way out of Corey's league.

Also, he's taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the "gimp ghetto" of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They're just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she's falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won't, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness -- one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who's afraid to love her back.

I picked up The Year We Fell Down while it was free, and Lorna @ Rabid Reads encouraged me to read it and I am so glad that I did. I loved it… It took me on an emotional and eye opening ride.

Corey started her first year of college in a wheelchair after an incident a few months back. She wanted some space from her parents and to gain back her independence. On her first day she met Adam Hartley, who broke his leg at a hockey camp over the summer. They strike up an easy friendship as they both felt like gimps and found it hard to get around. They formed a strong friendship as they had a lot in common. Corey found it hard to fight her attraction, knowing that Hartley had a girlfriend.

I loved how the relationship between Corey and Hartley developed. They both were struggling with their disabilities; however those disabilities brought them close together. They both shared a passion for ice hockey and since they couldn’t play they took up playing the video game. Their friendship was easy and Corey let her walls down and opened up to Hartley about a lot of things she wouldn’t normally talk about.

The Year We Fell Down is the first book that I have read by Sarina Bowen, and I have become an instant fan. I’ve read a lot of NA books over the last few years, but I loved how Corey and Hartley weren’t the conventional characters. They had personal and physical hurdles to overcome. I loved the way that Sarina wove Corey and Hartley’s story together, building their friendship with her beautiful writing style. I cannot wait to continue reading stories from this world.

This was such a sweet moment... I loved how Hartley opened up to Corey!

His gaze had the intensity of a laser. “But it’s not the same with you.”
My heart faltered. “ Why?”
“Because, Callahan.” The brown eyes came closer. “I never loved anyone the way I love you.” The next kiss was long and slow, and full of promise.
